PURPLE CONEFLOWER, ECHINACEA
Cucumber family. A perennial herb with a height of 60-100 cm and a short root. The
stems are red, simple or branched. Lower leaves in the form of a rosette, oblong-
ovate, hard, rough. Stem leaves alternate, ovate-lanceolate, with a sharp tip. The
flower baskets are single-layered, with a three-dimensional covering of lanceolate
leaves. Marginal flowers in the basket purple or dirty crimson, barren, tongue-
shaped; middle flowers - crimson red with 5 teeth on top. The fruit is a dark gray-
brown seed.
Blooms in July - August. Native to North America. Flower baskets are prepared in
July - August; rhizomes with roots - late autumn. Contains essential oil (in flower
baskets 0.13-0.48%). The roots contain glycoside, echinacoside, betaine, tar,
organic acids, phytosterol.
Endowed with analgesic and antiseptic action, it increases the activity of phagocytes
and significantly accelerates healing processes. Infusion: 2 g.kr. leave a basket of
echinacea flowers on 250 ml of cold boiled water for 8 hours. Used externally for
furunculosis, carbuncles, purulent wounds, ulcers and especially for burns.
Echinacea juice is applied to poultices on purulent wounds and is also used in the
cosmetic industry to make creams.
