A plant of the camomile genus of the aster family. Fragrant chamomile, which
delights the eyes with its yellow-white flowers every summer, is the most commonly
used component in medicine and cosmetology. Chamomile is an annual cultivated or
wild plant with a bare, strongly branched stem, alternating doubly or triply divided
leaves with linear leaflets. The flowers are in 1.5 - 2.5 wide baskets with white
tongue flowers and yellow tubular flowers, the bracts are arranged in 1 - 3 rows. The
bed of the urn is bare, flat at first, later elongated conical, hollow (diagnostic sign).
The flower baskets open gradually: at first the small flowers are directed upwards,
then horizontally, and after flowering - downwards. Fruit - a compound fruit
consisting of many small, elongated, slightly curved seeds without aerial hairs. The
plant has an aromatic smell.
Blooms from May to August, seeds ripen from June to September. The duration of
flowering of a single flower basket is about three weeks.
APPLICATION
Chamomile flowers (Flores Chamomillae) are one of the first medicinal plants in
Egypt, which the inhabitants themselves began to grow. Already there, the calming,
antiseptic, wound-healing and digestive system-improving, flatulence-reducing
properties of the plant were discovered.
Chamomile infusions have been used since ancient times in folk cosmetics - both for
hair and skin. Medicinal chamomile is used in medicine as an analgesic and as a
mild sedative for insomnia. Chamomile tea will be soothing and fatigue-relieving, a
compress (for example, on sore joints or muscle strains) will relieve pain.
The disinfecting and healing properties of chamomile have been known for a long
time. Compresses made from the plant will help against various skin ailments -
wounds and inflammations, rashes and swelling.
Chamomile is also used as a disinfectant for rinsing the oral mucosa. Chamomile oil
is obtained, the main active ingredient of which is bisabolol, which has anti-
inflammatory, anti-allergic and soothing effects. Chamomile oil is also widely used in
aromatherapy.
Chamomile softens and soothes the skin, so cosmetics made from it are used to
care for rough and irritated skin. Teenagers with problematic facial skin are advised
to wash it with a cooled decoction of chamomile, as chamomile also cleanses the
skin and reduces rashes.
Chamomile decoction is also used to rinse blonde hair. On the other hand,
compresses made from chilled chamomile tea or decoction will help to relax tired
eyes and reduce swelling around them. A tea bag can also be used for a tea
compress.
The most widely known medicinal chamomile herbal tea. For its preparation, it is
recommended to use 2 teaspoons of chamomile drug per cup of hot water. For
chronic stomach aches, it is recommended to drink this tea every morning on an
empty stomach for 2-3 months.
