GARDEN SAGE

A perennial half-shrub of the sedum family with a steep, branched trunk, 50 cm high.
The leaves are elongated, opposite to the stem, covered with hairs. The flowers are
blue-violet, collected in spikes that form interrupted bunches at the ends of stems
and branches. Blooms in June, July. The fruit is a 4-nut drupe.
The plant grows wild in the Mediterranean area. Grows on calcareous mountain
slopes. In Latvia, it is found only in plantations.
APPLICATION
Medicinal plant. Sage contains essential oil, the main components of which are p-
cineole, thujone, pinene, salvene, borneol, cedrene. Medicinal sage leaf infusion is
used as an astringent, disinfectant and anti-inflammatory agent, especially for the
treatment of inflammation of the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract.
In folk medicine, it is used against sweating, to reduce milk secretion, to treat
inflammation of the stomach and intestines, flatulence, diarrhea, inflammation of the
liver, gall bladder and kidneys.
Herb. Fresh and dried leaves are used with meat and fish dishes, sauces, cheese.
Improves the taste of pork, poultry and wild birds. Used for flavoring vinegar. It goes
well with rosemary in spice mixes.
